In the middle of a crisis, you often long for normality. It is hard to miss friends and family. It is hard not to see, talk, touch and be with each other. We miss being something for others. Unable to contribute fully.
But one should be careful what to wish for. Normal was not utopia. Especially in business, normal was broken – normal was a part of the problem. Savings and layoffs may be necessary to get companies through the crisis. But then what? Will we go straight back to excel sheets that register every minute of our workday? How many are working to live and how many are living to work?
The general short-term focus on performance, growth and efficiency has failed. They have not answered the big ‘Why’ that Simon Sinek so famously introduced. Why do we get up in the morning, commute for hours and spend precious time away from our loved ones? For the pay-check surely. But how long will that be enough?
Statistics show that the general stress level is higher than ever (at least up until the Corona-lockdown). Why is that? The world economy was booming, and most middle-class families in the west have a good economy. What are they stressing about?
Certainly not innovations, creative ideas and new concepts. All research shows that these things only strive in a stress-free environment.
Some may think that is just the price we have to pay for fancy cars and a house with a white fence. Yes, we would lose some of the good ones to stress, but at least the company is making a profit - bring in the micromanagers!
We do not need to create profit. We need to create value. Value for employees, value for the world. Lasting value.
So how can we create value? How can we matter, how can we contribute to a better society? In a perfect world, we all ought to stay at home and take care of our kids, partners, neighbours and friends. That is making a real difference.
But the world is not perfect, and we also need to pay the bills – which leads us back to the meaning and substance of our work.
Tagion is an open-source monetary system governed as a common. In other words, we are building something we hope can improve the world, and then we give it away for free to do just that.
Sounds crazy, and no-one in the team is doing it for the money, most could earn significantly more everywhere else. Tagion is not a project - it is a vision.
• It is a vision to become an aid for solving United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 10.c: by 2030, reduce to less than 3% the transaction costs of migrant remittances and eliminate remittance corridors with costs higher than 5%.
• It is a vision for banking the two billion that need safe financial services such as credit, savings and investments that are currently out of their reach.
• It is a vision to create a monetary system that fights inflation and gives the money power back to the people.
Insane? Probably, but at least we all know that our work matters and can make a real difference. That is what Tagion is all about. There are amazing people out in the world, but some of the most passionate ones are my team members.
That is far from normal, and that passion is going to change the world.
